Behind the Scenes Goth Style

by Sydney Jaclyn

Goth style is first and foremost about freedom of expression and portraying one's individuality. The Goth lifestyle is very popular. Teens are into it, but you may be surprised to learn that people in their twenties and older are adopting it too. Make-up, accessories, hair, and clothing are main aspects for defining this style.

Black is a predominant color. In fact, most people associate all or mostly black outfits with Goth fashion. It's usually combined with dramatic accessories such as velvet or fishnet tights and chunky silver jewelry. Although black is still the most commonly used clothing color among Goths, dark or bright jewel tones are being used more often to contribute to the feel of punk rock, the subculture from with the Goth style originated.

Another important part of the Goth style is hair. Hair has a lot of potential here. It is the one part of the body that's the easiest to style into an endless variety of different looks. Dyeing one's hair or wearing a wig is common amongst Goths.

Colors range from black to pink and everything in between, but usually are limited to one flat color, or one color with highly contrasting, chunky highlights. When it comes to Goth hair, "subtle" is a word that does not apply. Anything from shaved heads, blunt cuts, bobs, angled cuts, and Mohawks are acceptable in Goth fashion. All of these hair styles may be worn by girls, boys, men or women.

Now we move on to make-up. Goth makeup includes a lot of black, not surprisingly. Black eyeliner, black mascara, and even black lipstick are commonplace in the make-up kit of Goth style. Men and women alike wear make-up to contribute to their originality. You'll often see white foundation or cheek color used for creating contrast. Sometimes a Goth will add color in the form of colored false lashes or dark red lipstick.
