Understanding Goth Fashion

by Sydney Jaclyn

Black is certainly one of the main staples of Goth fashion, and has been for a number of years. However, black is such a versatile color, and it takes more than putting on a black outfit to call yourself a Goth. While fashion isn't what the Goth subculture is all about, the way you dress tells everyone else how you see yourself.

The purpose of Goth dress style is to express your own individuality. Black is a good place to start, but many Goths add varying shades of gray and even white to their outfits.

More and more, you see rich colors such as hot pink, dark red, and royal blue as part of Goth outfits. But still, one thing remains consistent: Black is the primary color.

When you want to achieve a Goth style, accessorizing is very important. The style is characterized by lots of jewelry and often lots of piercings. Jewelry is usually dramatic or chunky, and in silver or pewter.

Another important part of someone's identity is religious symbols, which are often worn as pendants. Patterned tights are not unusual, nor are gloves and sleeves (arm warmers). Working color into Goth fashion can be done with fishnet or striped tights.

It's not hard at all to find clothes that you can incorporate into your Goth style. Try starting at your local thrift store. This way, you find lots of stuff for cheap, and you'll be able to alter it to your tastes. You can dye it or add studs.

But you can even find the right clothes at a lot of retail stores. Since there are more people than ever who want to dress like Goths, a lot of stores are catering to the trend. You can make your outfit unique with your own jewelry and accessories.

You have thousands of choices when it comes to dressing in Goth fashion. Because it's all about individuality, you will find that no two Goths dress alike.
